The Computer Led Me to a Mountain
I had a three-day weekend over Labor Day. I wanted to go somewhere. I was booking last minute, just a week or so before the weekend. All the good campsites were booked. Beachfront resorts were charging way too much. I didn’t want to deal with holiday weekend traffic on I-95. So I did what we all must do when we don’t know where to travel: we use the Explore tab on the Kayak app to find the cheapest fares from Savannah on Saturday.
The cheapest fare was to Newark. I’m not going to Newark. There were also cheap flights to Chicago and Cincinnati. But I’ve been to Chicago, and I was feeling like a mountain trip, not a small city trip. So I began looking for airports close to the Adirondacks, the Appalachians, or the Ozarks. I came across a reasonable round-trip fare to Northwest Arkansas National Airport. I then searched for mountain resorts near Fayetteville, Arkansas and came across Mount Magazine, a state park with a hotel-style lodge. Reader, I booked it. I enjoyed it. I recommend it. I wish I could have stayed longer.
